Liverpool have drawn their first game against Arsenal and have fallen leaps behind their competitors in the initial league table. The Reds have have extended the contract of their defender Martin Skrtel for two more years. The club had paid a record £6 million for a defender when they signed Skrtel from Zenit St Petersburg in January 2008. One could consider Liverpool fortunate when the Gunners had to keep their two most flamboyant players Cesc Fabregas and Robin van Persie in the bench as they lacked match fitness. Nonetheless, it was good game of football and Liverpool is expected to show more of their might in their next game against Manchester City.

Manchester City did not have a good opening game against this year’s Champions League participant Tottenham Hotspurs. The Big Spenders were expected to show more fire power but failed to do so as they finished a goalless draw against the Spurs. The likes of Tevez, Yaya Toure and David Silva should have had given a performance that could earn their side full points that would have kept them close to the Cup contenders. However, all is not lost yet; City’s next game against Liverpool is the game for them to prove a point. Manchester United have started their Premier League season with style. The Red Devils beat the premier league returnees New Castle United by 3 – 0. Berbatov was included in the best 11 and he responded in style as he scored the opener in the 33rd minute. Shortly before the break Darren Fletcher doubled the lead. The third goal was scored by the evergreen veteran Ryan Giggs. In the midfield Paul Scholes kept on shining with his consistent passing and holding possessions. Newcastle started their returning game with a deep defensive approach, however, they failed to content with their tactics as Barbatov broke through. The Bulgarian striker could have scored another goal just after the half-time but he missed on to that. After the game Sir Alex Ferguson was ecstatic with the performance of his team, however he could have been more satisfied had Rooney scored a goal. Nevertheless, a win is the most important and Rooney will have his day when he will put the icing on the cake.

Fulham have started their Premier League campaign with a subdued performance. They drew their opening game against Bolton to share a point a piece. It was Bolton who dominated the game however, failing to score despite getting a number of opportunities during the play. One of the major misses was when Stuart Holden‘s shot hit the post in the 78th minute.

Wigan on the other hand had a experienced a similar story like West Brom when they were overwhelmed by the Premier League returnees Blackpool. The composed and well-organised Ian Holloway’s team thrashed Wigan by 4 goals to nil. Blackpool last played at the top level in 1971, however, none had the impression of their long absence from the top flight while watching the game.

After being in the 2nd tier of the football leagues last season, Newcastle United have made it to the Premier League ,winning the 2nd Division league. Sol Cambell has signed with the club but is rumored to be unfit for the first game. Andy Caroll proved to be a real prospect for the Magpies; a player of that caliber will aim to prove his game against the senior members of the league.
