Liverpool have drawn their first game against Arsenal and have fallen leaps behind their competitors in the initial league table. Their 1-1 draw against Arsene Wenger’s team may look bland however, considering their last league performance and a ten man show by Liverpool after Joe Cole was sent off, one would know it was rather a fighting performance. It was Jose Reina‘s late mistake that had gave opportunity to Arsenal to level the score and snatching a draw. The Reds have have extended the contract of their defender Martin Skrtel for two more years. The club had paid a record £6 million for a defender when they signed Skrtel from Zenit St Petersburg in January 2008. One could consider Liverpool fortunate when the Gunners had to keep their two most flamboyant players Cesc Fabregas and Robin van Persie in the bench as they lacked match fitness. Nonetheless, it was good game of football and Liverpool is expected to show more of their might in their next game against Manchester City.
Manchester City did not have a good opening game against this year’s Champions League participant Tottenham Hotspurs. The Big Spenders were expected to show more fire power but failed to do so as they finished a goalless draw against the Spurs. The likes of Tevez, Yaya Toure and David Silva should have had given a performance that could earn their side full points that would have kept them close to the Cup contenders. However, all is not lost yet; City’s next game against Liverpool is the game for them to prove a point. Carlos Tevez had already made a statement when he said that, Manchester City is a title contender for this season’s Premier League. Next Monday’s game will validate the statement, when both the teams will be playing to win.
