France coach Raymond Domenech will want to use his side’s international friendly against Argentina on Wednesday as a test for several of his squad’s untried players as he looks to revive their flagging World Cup qualifying campaign. Domenech’s 21-man squad for the match had some surprises in store such as a shock call-up for Toulouse goalkeeper Cedric Carrasso. The latter will act as a third choice keeper with Steve Mandanda and Hugo Lloris being the first and second choice goalkeepers respectively.
Florent Malouda has once again been left out, while there is no place for Jean-Alain Boumsong. The latter has been replaced by Julien Escude of Sevilla. Patrice Evra is out with a foot injury. Gael Clichy and Eric Abidal will be in contention for the left back position in this game with the same player standing a good chance to play against Lithuania in France’s world cup qualifier next month.
Domenech is also hoping influential midfielder Patrick Viera recovers from his Achilles problem soon enough so as to feature in some crucial games ahead for the national team. Viera has indicated he may consider quitting international soccer if his injury does not heal soon enough.
France are tottering in their qualifying group lying fourth with four points from three games played so far.
Meanwhile Argentina coach Diego Maradona has recalled Juan Sebastian Veron for his side’s friendly against France in Marseille. However Boca Juniors playmaker Roman Riquelme does not find a place in the squad. Other surprise inclusions in Argentina’s squad for this game include Marcos Angeleri, Cristian Ledesma, Emiliano Papa and Daniel Montenegro.
